Mark your calendar for live jazz at the High, hosted by Jamal Ahmad from Jazz 91.9 WCLK, Atlanta’s jazz station! On the third Friday of every month, you’ll enjoy music, drinks, and art. Each month will feature a different style of jazz, from straight ahead to free jazz, bebop to swing, and more.

August features the music of vocalist Brenda Nicole Moorer.

      About Brenda Nicole Moorer

Winner of the 2017 Creative Loafing Best Soul & Jazz vocalist award, Brenda Nicole Moorer is making a name for herself one city at a time. The Atlanta-bred songstress has already graced stages alongside jazz heavy hitters including Christian McBride, Incognito, Booker T. Jones, Roy Ayers, and Brandon Williams. She has also performed at notable venues such as the Blue Note in New York, Rockwood Music Hall, and City Winery. Brenda’s music has garnered attention from tastemaker Gilles Peterson, DJ Jamal Ahmad, Ebony magazine, Afroelle, Singersroom, Afropunk, and SoulTracks. Her latest album, Brand New Heart, landed her a licensing deal with Japan’s P-Vine Records.

Brenda’s brand of music is both refreshing and vintage, like a quiet gardenscape of secret passages, situated somewhere between sunrise and heartbreak. SoulBounce describes Brenda’s voice as “a sweet sound, like a blend between Minnie Riperton and Corinne Bailey Rae.” Brenda fuses jazz, soul, and folk to craft songs with a quiet ache and intriguing pull. She works closely with Brooklyn-based keyboardist/producer Jesse Fischer. Together, they released the EP For Lovers & Believers, which presents a positive message through simple melodies atop laid-back rhythms, heavy Rhodes, and underlying synths. Brenda’s latest album, the full-length Brand New Heart, was co-written with keyboardist Kenny Banks Jr. and Fischer, and features Chris Turner from Snarky Puppy’s Family Dinner. Brenda’s latest work has landed her on Good Day Atlanta, and she often sings at events for Atlanta’s Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs. She is currently on tour with her four-piece band and performs regularly in Atlanta and New York.

Brenda earned a master’s degree from SCAD. As an arts advocate, she also contributes to the arts community in metro Atlanta and is an alumna of the Arts Leaders of Metro Atlanta (ALMA), 2016. She has worked with nonprofits including the New York Philharmonic, Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theatre, and the Center for Puppetry Arts.
