Tepee Camping, Callaway Gardens and Little White House Weekend Extravaganga

It's time for a weekend adventure full of nature, camping and history. The plan for Saturday and Sunday is listed below. Feel free to join us for all of part of the weekend festivities. 8:30 am Saturday morning- Depart for Callaway Gardens At the Gardens, we will explore the attractions such as the butterfly pavallion and the vegetable garden. Of course, we will hit the trails to either hike or bike the gardens. The hiking paths total approximately 7.5 miles and the bike path is 10 miles. After our rendevous at Callaway Gardens, we will head over to our campsite to continue the fun. The yurts (ie teepees) are furnished with bed linens, heat, and air. Restroom and shower facilities are available so be sure to bring your towels for showering. On Sunday, we will head out over to Warm Springs, Georgia, to visit FDR's Little White House. Our former President first came to Warm Springs in 1924 hoping to find a cure for the infantile paralysis (polio) that had struck him in 1921. Swimming in the 88-degree, buoyant spring waters brought him no miracle cure, but it did bring improvement. During FDR's presidency and the Great Depression, he developed many New Deal Programs (such as the Rural Electrification Administration) based upon his experiences in this small town. While posing for a portrait on April 12, 1945, FDR suffered a stroke and died a short while later. Today, the "Unfinished Portrait" is featured in a museum that showcases many exhibits, including FDR's 1938 Ford convertible with hand controls, his Fireside Chats playing over a 1930s radio, his stagecoach and a theater. Visitors can tour FDR's home, which has been carefully preserved very much as he left it, the servants and guest quarters, and the nearby pools complex that first brought the future president to Warm Springs. Selected as a "Readers Choice" site in Georgia Magazine, October 2009. Note: The cost of the event covers your lodging only. You will need additional funds for the following: Admission to Callaway Gardens- $18 includes the Virginia Hand Callaway Discovery Center; Cecil B. Day Butterfly Center; John A. Sibley Horticultural Center; Mr. Cason's Vegetable Garden; Callaway Brothers Azalea Bowl; Overlook Azalea Garden; Discovery Bicycle Trail; Pioneer Log Cabin; Birds of Prey Shows; Ida Cason Callaway Memorial Chapel; nature trails and daily programs.
