Teaching for Social Justice & Democracy Speaker Series: Doug Blackmon

The Teaching for Social Justice and Democracy series will focus on instructional strategies and unique teaching methods centered on emerging social justice issues. GSU faculty from various departments will discuss their discoveries, realizations and methods used to integrate current social justice issues into classroom activities while creating engagement, motivation and inspiration to GSU students. Guest Speaker Doug Blackmon  Title: Teaching a Terrible Past Abstract:   At a time when past abuses in American history, such as false imprisonment, forced labor, mob violence and structured racial oppression, seem more relevant than ever to students grappling with present day police violence, mass incarceration, racist historical symbols, and broad social inequalities, teaching the most terrible dimensions of American history is more crucial than ever. But how do we do it, especially in an information environment flooded with false narratives?
