      EVENT DETAILS
Read, Write, Rhyme Institute: Educators, Entertainers, and Entrepreneurs Engaging in Hip-Hop Discourse

Dr. Crystal LaVoulle will discuss her books "Read, Write, Rhyme Institute: Educators, Entertainers, and Entrepreneurs Engaging in Hip-Hop Discourse" and "Teaching with Diversity and Cultural Competence in Mind: Using Popular Culture Texts to Teach Social Justice." "Read, Write, Rhyme Institute: Educators, Entertainers, and Entrepreneurs Engaging in Hip-Hop Discourse" addresses the issue of hip-hop culture’s encroachment upon the school environment and the ways that hip-hop can be used for social justice. Participants discuss social economic status, classism and social justice as they relate to education of the current hip-hop generation. Hip-hop Discourse provides an opportunity to critically examine hip- hop not only as a cultural phenomenon but also as a way of daily life. "Teaching with Diversity and Cultural Competence in Mind: Using Popular Culture Texts to Teach Social Justice" uses Culturally Responsive Pedagogy as a guide to promote racial, social, economic, and youth justice while challenging standardization in schools.
